Byrnes out at A&M?

S.A. Express-News reported that this morning. Anyone know why? Can’t wait to hear how the collies  spin this.

  1. He has never truly fit in at College Station, the thought is he lifted other programs at the expense of the football program (same wrap he got at Nebraska), the athletic department has money problems, he botched the network deal with Texas, and he outwardedly has spoken out against going to the SEC.

  2. This is something that surprisingly, I have some inside knowledge on. Speaking with a high ranking atm alum, former president of the alumni association, Byrne has overstepped his ground on multiple occasions and the conflict with a fellow administrator carried on a public BBS (Texags) was truly the final straw. The alum saw him as clueless to the goals of atm alums and felt that his hiring was just the first in a step of blunders that has led atm down the road to what is likely to be financial calamity with conference changes, coaching change, lack of a truly marketable independent brand (you mean every kid in the state DOESN’T want to be called an aggy swaggy?), and lack of planning for a UT-free existence. Yes a UT-free existence frightens this ag alum who was very frank with me in that he knew we could do without atm but not vice versa.

Do not be surprised to see Byrne’s replacement send much friendlier overtures to DeLoss assuming he can avoid/steer atm away from any massive rebuilding refurbishing of their stadium and facilities. If that can’t be overcome, there is no way that UT will want to be tied to atm in any way in the future with so much debt and uncertainty surrounding the program.

    • Thanks for sharing the insite 98 and I wonder if not only Byrne, but the person who hired him misunderstand the true direction of the university. I have been through a couple of those work situations where the person who got hired thought they were brought in to change the culture and that was the last thing they were hired to do at the company

Your comments also raise the question if you are Dodds do you even consider re-establishing ties with the Ags if Byrne is let go or do you let them wander in the SEC wilderness.

      • I’m always for reconciliation, but in this instance I think you have to let them go and don’t look back. There was simply too much animosity on their departure to welcome them back any time soon. Besides, something tells me that if they did contact Dodds again they would not be coming with hat in hand; more likely there would be a list of conditions that would need to be met.

  3. Good point about the atmosphere around their departure.

I think the best thing they can do at this time is focus on building the best athletic department possible and if overtime the two schools are brought back together it happens and if not make the best out of the SEC.
